Raw Carrot Cake Bites and what Whole30 means to ME
I am leading a whole30 that starts in just 2 days! If you follow me on Instagram, you already know this. This will be my fourth round! I am getting tons of emails and private messages with questions so I am compiling the guidelines here. The group will be entirely on Instagram. I don't want anyone to feel like they need to use my blog to do this. We will support one another using the hashtag #plgwhole30
✔️Read the book. You need to know the ground rules.
✔️No cheating. At all. Period. You can't have one m&m or one bite of your kids pizza.
✔️Check the #plgwhole30 hashtag daily and support each other. Help someone out that has a question, cheer someone on.
Read the website http://whole9life.com there is awesome information on there. I particularly love the shopping list http://whole9life.com/book/ISWF-Shopping-List.pdf and timelinehttp://whole30.com/2013/08/revised-timeline/.
Preparation is key during whole30. If you are prepared you will never be hungry and you will succeed. Some whole30 food staples for me that require some prepping are bone broth, fermented veggies and homemade mayo. Some Items I can't live with out (other than veggies, eggs and grassfed meat) -ghee, coconut aminos, coconut oil, coconut butter and cashew butter.
I think it's important to think about what whole30 means to you. What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to lose weight? Are you a sugar addict? Are you trying to alleviate some kind of pain or symptom? Are you a binge eater? Do you have brain fog? Are you trying to detox? Whatever it is, this will help you. But whole30 is different for everyone and I think needs to tweaked for each individual.
For me, whole30 is a reset button. It resets my sugar gage for sure. By day 30 things that are not usually sweet are sweet for me. Some of these things will stick with you. I developed the sweet taste for coconut milk, coconut butter and nut butter during whole30 and never lost it. These things are sweet to me now and were not in the past. I feel great during and after whole30, I use it as a detox. I thoroughly enjoy taking a break from sugar, even though I only use unrefined natural sweeteners, I can still feel the difference without them. I eat paleo most of the time, and I still benefit tremendously from whole30! My breast milk supply increases in fat content, which is great, and my nursling is always super happy about this! It's definitely not about weight for me, my weight never changes during whole30. I always eat as much as I want and as a nursing mother, that's a lot! It's more of a mind cleanse for me. I love the mental clarity clean eating brings about and and I love the clear skin and bright eye high!
These raw carrot cake bites are a great snack and all ingredients are whole30 compliant. Don't be thrown off by the name! This is not cake, it's only a cute name I've created for fun. They are sweetened only with whole dates. They are packed with healthy fat, fiber, vitamins and protein. I like having an easy to grab snack available. I know at least one of you are thinking this is SWYPO and I'm re-creating a dessert and this is against the rules. This is not the case for me. Which is why I brought up what whole30 means for you. This is not dessert for me and I am not using this to take the place of "treats". These really aren't even sweet, definitely not as sweet as a Lara bar, which are approved. In fact, some may even call them savory. Whatever you want to call it, they are very tasty I promise! If you are not doing whole30- try adding 1 tbsp coconut sugar or raw honey. It will enhance the flavors even more, as these really are not sweet.
If you are a binge eater and are going to binge on these carrot cake bites every night- they're not for you. Don't make them. If you're addicted to sweets after dinner and you plan to use these as that after dinner treat- they're not for you. If you are an athlete or a pregnant or nursing mother, like me, that needs to stay fueled and needs a quick snack to be able to grab during your day- these are for you. See what I mean? The same thing goes for Lara bars. They are allowed but think about what you are using them for. They shouldn't be a meal replacement and shouldn't be your evening "treat". The sugar is natural, from dates, but it is sugar and if you are trying to quiet your sugar demons, you may want to steer clear of dates and limit fruits more than the next guy.
I want to note that part of the idea of whole30 is to not have to snack. To eat tons of real, whole, nourishing foods at meals and be satisfied throughout the day. To eat healthy fats and proteins that leave you never hungry. This is true and awesome and it really works. But here's where the individual circumstances come in, so please, think about what whole30 means for you.
I know for a fact that people give up whole30 because they are bored and don't have the time to whip up creative meal ideas. All month I will be sharing whole30 compliant food ideas. I believe in eating real whole foods but I also believe in flavor! And enjoying food! I have so many ideas and recipes and am looking forward to sharing and seeing your ideas and meals also.
I'm excited for this round and excited to see what it brings about for me. You can do this! Don't be afraid, if you have questions post a picture under the hashtag and someone will help you. That's the whole idea of this thing- group support.
- Be prepared!!! I cannot stress this enough, it's the number one thing. Meal plan, make grocery lists, hard boil eggs, prep foods ahead of time, make huge batches of sweet potatoes...
- Try to get your family on board! I am not making extra meals. My family eats what I eat. It will benefit them just as much as you. Especially if you have kids, you'd be shocked at what they will actually eat if it's all that's available. We haven't had grains in the house at all for years! I have a 3 1/2 year old, I know how kids can be, but during whole30 he eats whole30 most of the time.
- Cleanse your mind with your body. Work on some mental detoxing, even if that is only writing in a journal.
- Use the group for support! Make a friend.
- Try new foods, find new food blogs. Clean eating is NOT boring.
Ok. Let's do this! Here is the recipe!
